You Are Living in a Surveillance Society; Deal with it! — by Stephen Mahaney

Astonishingly, people like Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young have yet to hear the news that surveillance cameras are everywhere! After all, what other possible explanation could there be for getting involved in a scuffle at 3am in a nightclub staffed by bouncers and every other possible means of securing the premises. Such stupidity is simply stunning.

In case you haven't heard, we now have security cameras at nightclubs, bars, banks, fast food restaurants, WalMart, K-Mart, and all of their equivalents. In fact, they are now basically ubiquitous. It's time that everyone wake up and accept this 21st century fact of life and deal with it!

But hey, you knew that already, right?

But you haven't seen anything yet. The next wave of surveillance is gotcha videos. They are typically done by high resolution spy cameras which can be hidden just about anywhere—a shirt button, a screw, the face of a clock; anywhere. Audio recording devices make it easy to listen in from a distance and everything keeps getting smaller as the quality continues to improve with no end in sight. The spy equipment is easy to get, easy to use, and it’s affordable for almost anyone.

In fact, it's literally child's play...as evidenced by the little brother who mischievously and secretly captured his older brother’s meltdown within the supposedly "private" setting of his own bedroom. And then he posted it on Youtube as the greatest freak out ever! The last we checked, there were 27.5 million views.

But even scarier is the allegation that school officials in Pennsylvania spied on students in their own homes.

The point is that cameras are finding their way into places in our lives that we would never expect them to be. They are now recording us (legally or otherwise) in traditionally private settings that no longer are. Clearly, we must exercise caution least we be caught at our worse and taken out of context. It doesn't matter that the setting or the legality of being recorded can be called into question. Once we've been caught on tape, our fate is sealed in the court of public opinion.

It is time for all of us to awaken to the reality that security cameras are located in virtually ALL public places. The reality of spy cameras means that any one of us can be caught at our worst any time we experience a meltdown. After all, few among us can weather the storm that follows after losing our good judgement and stupidly pulling a Vince Young.
